Buying a Vacuum: FAQ

What Is the Best Vacuum and Why?

This is the most common question people ask about vacuums. The answer is not so simple. It depends on need and preference/what you like using. The $300 plus category is where the best vacuums reside. What type of carpets, pets, how big is the house, what have you used in the past, quality wise what do you want, etc. also depends on what you need. To decide on a brand you need help from an expert. Ask what you don’t like about your current vacuum.

What Is the Best Vacuum to Save Time?

New robotics help save time. The top of the carpet will be clean due to a robotic but it might not go as deep as you need it to. Light weight stick vacs and mops are rechargeable and easy to use. Oreck and lighter weight deep cleaning vacuums are pretty good. A backpack vacuum is the fastest. You can spot clean with it and don’t have to go back and forth. Most people don’t use them in the home. Time is really important in commercial situations so that’s why you see them then.

What Is the Best Vacuum for Pet Hair?

It will depend on the kind of pet hair and amount. You will want some type of hand tool with a rotating brush. An accessory or attachment with a rotating brush will help get hair off small rugs furniture etc. if people have allergies to dander you need a good HEPA filter. Sometimes you have to worry about clogging and bag issues with pet hair. Sometimes pet hair won’t compress in the bag. Suck up some activated carbon and it will take care of pet smells coming in from the hair.

What Is a True HEPA Filter?

There’s not a standard. Percentages mean nothing. A true HEPA filter filters down to 0.3 microns. This is the size below a typical allergen (pollen etc.). A piece of pollen or dander, or dust mites, are going to get trapped inside the filter if it is that size.

What Are the Advantages of Purchasing a Refurbished Vacuum?

Refurbished vacuums are factory serviced and recertified before sale. Vacuums are often returned due to buyer's remorse. Most of the time it is worth it to buy refurbished, especially if you have a reputable seller with a good history, extended warranties and return policies. That way if you have a problem with the product the dealer will take care of it for you.

How Much Power Do I Need?

When it comes to power, you don’t need as much as most people think you need. You have a limitation from the outlet, anyway. If you try to run 2 vacs on the same circuit you’ll throw a breaker. Most vacs are 12 amps combined. 5-6 are all that’s necessary. A new trend is smaller amp numbers on motors. As long as you’re getting air flow, the more power you’re putting in the motor isn’t going to help that much. A vacuum with half the power is still going to clean about the same amount. Most commercial vacs have 6 amp motors.

How Many Vacuum Attachments Do I Really Need?

Lots of attachments come with different packages, many are specialty. People with pets need the spinning brush roll hand tool. The crevice tool is the other tool that’s very important, for directed suction, edging along corners, and reaching difficult spots in the ceiling. A dusting brush has a soft bristle that helps get dust off of items. The upholstery tool is probably the least used tool, used for lint, visible dirt, etc. People use the spinning brush hand tool for stairs. After that everything is highly specialized. You can add tools later if you want.

What Are the Advantages and Weaknesses of Robotic Vacuums?

Robot vacs are worth the money if you can afford them, they are definite time savers and kind of cool! They can recharge themselves and use GPS type systems to map out your cleaning area. Their cycles run quicker and use less battery charge time. Their weaknesses: they are not really good at deep cleaning and you still need an upright available for the deepest cleaning. However, you’ll probably use the upright cleaner much less than you would normally and your house will stay cleaner longer.

What Is the Best Vacuum for An Apartment or Dorm?

Smaller canisters and stick vacs are good for these situations. If you want heavier cleaning there's the Dyson City, a small compact canister and the DC24, which is a small upright that looks like a toy but has the power of a full size upright. Make sure the handle goes down and folds with an upright. You want to make sure it doesn’t take up extra closet space.

What Is the Best Vacuum for Wood Floors?

People are used to upright vacuums but they’re not good for wood floors. Canisters are good for wood floors. Long hose, small head. You don’t want a spinning brush on your wood floors. It kicks things around, the nozzle is much bigger, it’s not going to be as effective on a flat surface. It has nothing to grab onto so to speak. More direction suction is best. Bare floor mode on an upright will stop the brush from turning which will save you from kicking things around. Dyson is good for this. Everything is tested to see if it works as well on carpet or hard floor. A stick type vacuum is often used on hard floor, and some robotics will clean on hard floors. You want two vacuums if you have some carpet, some wood floor in your home.

What Is the Best Vacuum for Stairs?

Have a vaccuum for upstairs and downstairs if weight is an issue. A lightweight vacuum or canister style vacuum is easier to carry. The weight on such vacuums is centered differently. A full size upright that is 20 lbs or so is going to be hardest to deal with. This type of vacuum doesn't have good carrying capabilities. A compact or smaller upright, 8 to 10 lbs, that’s a good one to go with also. Make sure it’s also cleaning well, especially with thick carpets.

What Vacuum Is Best For Cleaning A Car?

Any vacuum with attachments can clean your car. A smaller shopvac or canister type with crevice tools, upholstery nozzles, and so on can work. Cleaning a car can be cumbersome, so a second, portable vacuum is ideal.

What Vacuum Is Best For Delicate Items?

All you can do is turn the power way down. You need a variable speed motor. Dial or buttons. Minimal suction. This is good for curtains and throw rugs.

What Type Of Vacuum Is Best If Noise Is An Issue?

If noise is an issue, you will want a HEPA filter on the exhaust. Noise comes out of the exhaust and is silenced a bit. Lower amperage motors are also helpful. Most vacuums have a 12 amp motor but they don’t really need it. As low as 6 amps will be considerably quieter, yet still have a good cleaning efficiency.

What Vacuum Is Best For Dealing With Allergies?

For dealing with allergies, you need a good air purification system accompanied by a good vacuum cleaner. They need to work together. A sealed HEPA filter is the most important thing. A HEPA filter will actually filter out all particles down to the smallest size that’s needed, below allergen level, as long as its sealed and the particles aren’t getting through the seal. Air exhaust is the second most important thing. Air exhaust can be stirring up dust and allergens. Moves particles from the cleaning path. But most vacuums are good at this.

Why Are Dirt Sensors Useful?

Dirt sensors aren’t strictly necessary, but they do teach you how to vacuum better. A sensor comes on to let you know you’re picking up dirt, you need to move slower, where the dirt is, and so on. You don’t know really what you’re doing without a dirt sensor. You’re just going back and forth. As always with vacuuming, you want to concentrate on traffic areas. Dirt can be deeply embedded in traffic areas.

What Vacuums Are Easiest To Retrieve Objects From?

Dyson allows you to take key components from the vacuum without tools. You can call their 800 number. It's usually pretty simple. If you have another model you should probably call in a professional.

What Vacuums Are Best For Carpet?

A rotating brush roller, usually in the front of machine, agitates carpet and picks things up. For low carpet - almost anything will clean that well but you probably don’t need heavy agitation. For thiker carpets, frisees, thicker shags, a belt driven brush roller is best, not just cogged. A regular belt may slip on thicker carpets. They will get bogged down. You want something with the ability to raise the head up. Gear or cog driven. Cog belt is fine. You don’t want to vacuum this kind of carpet as often because it is hard on it.

How Often Should I Vacuum?

There is no set criteria for how often you should vacuum. Once a day, once a week, once every two weeks, this will affect what vacuum you want. A commercial business needs a commercial vac. Most people vac once or twice a week. You can get anything you want at that level.

What Brands Have The Best Customer Care?

You want a good warranty on the box, 3 to 5 years warranty minimum. A higher end vacuum, anything over $400, these will be the easiest brands to deal with. The seller (like ABC) is more important than the brand you’re buying, as the seller is the go between. You can contact us with any question you may have about your vacuum.

What Should I Look For On A Vacuum Box?

Energy star, CRI, energy star is usually only seen on a battery type of product. No continuous use on a normal upright vacuum. No use looking for that on a normal one. You might find one on a rechargeable vacuum. Labeling to look for: HEPA filter. You know cleaning and filtration will be a little better. Nothing special to be really watching for, some people like the good housekeeping seal of approval. Look for warranty, that’s an indication of quality.

What Are You Getting With A Dyson Refurbished Vacuum?

Dyson and Apple have similar remanufacturing philosophies. Really high quality, when the machines come in they’re completely disassembled. All parts are evaluated to see if they are new quality or better, if not they are replaced, reassembled, and double tested for suction quality and electrical quality, procedures not even done in the original. You’re getting a hand built machine basically. Never have issues with these. Have no problem offering additional warranties with them. You’ll save a lot on the price. Make sure the package comes with all the tools and accessories you think it does. Sometimes the naming gets confusing.

Do I Really Need A Dyson?

You don’t completely need a Dyson, but they do put a lot of effort and money into their engineering. It is a really high quality product with a really good warranty. If you can afford it, look at the Dyson.
